Arsenal have confirmed that Edu has resigned as the club’s sporting director.
The Brazilian, who made 127 appearances for the club as a player, was appointed technical director in 2019, before subsequently being promoted to sporting director two years ago.
Edu has since overseen the men’s and women’s teams, as well as the academy teams, but made the decision to leave the Gunners and “pursue a different challenge”.
He said: “It was an incredibly difficult decision to make.
“Arsenal have given me the opportunity to work with so many extraordinary people and the chance to be part of something so special in the club’s history.
“It has been a special journey and I thank Stan, Josh, Tim and Lord Harris for the support they have given me. “I have loved working with many wonderful colleagues across our men’s, women’s and academic teams, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend.
“Now it’s time for another challenge. Arsenal will always be in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the best.
Reports suggest that Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis wants Edu to oversee his portfolio of clubs, which also includes Olympiakos and Rio Ave.
It is claimed Edu is in line to get a significant pay rise if he takes on the role.
His departure comes at a difficult time for Arsenal, who are on a poor run and have fallen seven points behind in the Premier League title race.
Arsenal co-chairman Josh Kroenke said: “We respect Edu’s decision and thank him for his immense contribution and dedication to moving the club forward.
“Everyone at the club wishes him good luck. We all love him very much and the positive energy he brings to everything and everyone.
“Change and evolution are part of our club. We remain focused on our strategy and winning major trophies. Our succession plan will reflect this continued ambition.
